The Egyptian capital is a bewitching mix of the ancient and modern, the secular and the sacred. Here’s how to get the best from your stay.
Day One
Pick the right hotel
Where to rest your head? Definitely by the Nile. Try the Four Seasons Nile Plaza for a luxurious stay or the stunning Sofitel El Gezirah; its location at the tip of Zamalek Island is unbeatable. And those river views are amazing!
Sightseeing
Start the day with a visit to the pyramids/sakkara (step pyramid) area. To get the best out of your trip, we can arrange private transport and a tour with a senior Egyptologist. Make sure your guide includes the ‘Sun Boat’ on your tour as it’s incredible.
For lunch
Stop at the nearby Mena House, a world-famous hotel overlooking the pyramids. Currently operated by the Marriott, its restaurants offer a variety of cuisine.
History break
It’s 2pm and time for your guide to take you to the Egyptian Museum where you can get lost in the wealth of history that awaits you.
Relaxation nation
After your day of sightseeing, you’ll need some time to relax, so we’d advise booking a spa treatment, followed by an early evening nap. And then out into the night for dinner on the banks of the Nile. Head to the El Kebabgy Oriental Grill at the Sofitel El Gezirah, but you may need to loosen your belt afterwards!
For drinks
Don’t fancy turning in yet? Go to Pier 88 Cairo for a night of dancing with the movers and shakers of the city.
Day Two
Explore the past
Spend your morning discovering Islamic and Coptic Cairo with your Egyptologist. As well as the myriad ancient mosques and churches to visit, there are dozens of colourful alleyways to get lost in. Head downtown after your tour to find lunch; we’d recommend a quick bite at Crimson for delicious food and a spectacular view.
Market forces
In the afternoon, go to Khan El Khalili, Cairo’s famous artisan market, where you can find wonderful handicrafts and souvenirs. Don’t be afraid to haggle – you have to secure a bargain!
Floating dinner
For early evening, Quintessentially can arrange a sunset cruise with dinner and drinks on a felucca – a traditional sailboat. For your final outing, we’ll take you on a trip to the suburbs for a night at Cairo Jazz Club 610. Egyptians love to have fun and this a great place to experience the crazy atmosphere. Be prepared to party to the wee hours of the morning!
