These foods epitomize a classic American summer. Indulge, and celebrate these warm days—they are fleeting.
Lobster Roll at The Lobster Roll Restaurant, Amagansett, NY
Open since 1965, this no-frills South Fork restaurant offers many classic seafood dishes but are most famous for their Lobster Rolls. Served either hot with drawn butter or salad-style mixed with mayo and celery, both options are pretty delicious. We recommend enjoying one outside in the sun at the picnic tables, followed by a tangy slice of Frozen Key Lime Pie.
Salt Water Taffy from Dolle’s, Ocean City, MD
Dolle’s has been making Salt Water Taffy since 1910. Still family-run, their taffy recipe (which doesn’t actually contain saltwater) has remained unchanged. The soft, fluffy taffy has a chewy texture and comes in a wide variety of flavours—choose an assortment in the 1.5lb bucket, so you have plenty to snack on for the rest of the summer season.
Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog, Coney Island, NY
Home of The Hot Dog Eating Contest—a quintessential American summertime activity—Nathan’s has been serving up their classic hot dogs to Coney Island’s visitors for over 100 years. Get an Original Frankfurter and a lemonade to eat on a bench overlooking the beach and absorb the sunshine.
Fried Clams at The Net Result, Martha’s Vineyard, MA
Fried clams are ubiquitous across the Vineyard. At The Net Result, though, they’re guaranteed to be super fresh; also a fish stand, the seafood is amongst the Vineyard’s best. Run by the Larsen family for four generations, their reputation for offering the freshest fish around is well earned. The Steamed Clams with broth are pretty delicious as well, drowning in a lemony butter sauce that is perfect for dipping fries into when the clams are gone.
Funnel Cake from Fry Me Up, Seaside Heights, NJ
This beachside stand is a mecca for all things fried, and we mean all things from butter to pickles to Oreo’s. The speciality, however, is Funnel Cake. Originally from Pennsylvania, New Jersey has all but claimed this treat as their own, especially along the shore. Dusted with powdered sugar, this doughnut-like cake is best enjoyed while strolling along the boardwalk, breathing in the salt air.
Blueberry Pie at Mabel’s Lobster Claw, Kennebunkport, ME
Mabel’s has been a Maine favourite since 1953. The front porch dining area is inviting and cosy while the menu is full of lobster in various iterations (the Lobster Cobb salad is delicious) and freshly caught fish. The highlight though is the Blueberry Pie. The official state fruit, blueberries are in abundance, and this double-high pie features them in all of their summer glory. Served à la mode, it is the ideal summer treat.
