When temperatures soar this summer, Dubai’s outdoors can turn into a sweltering no-go zone. But even as the blazing sun makes fresh air off-limits during daylight hours, it doesn’t have to put a damper on your fun. Because there are ice-lined snow caves, sky-high infinity pools, mocktail lounges carved out of ice, and even ski resorts in the heart of the Arabian desert – all right here in Dubai. So, here’s how – and where – to stay cool this July.

AURA SKYPOOL

Soaring high on the 50th floor of The Palm Tower, AURA SKYPOOL is the world's highest 360-degree infinity pool. So, if you’re not quite ready to retire your swimsuit, take a refreshing dip in the temperature-controlled waters whilst marvelling at the panoramic views of the city.

But a day at Aura is more than just a poolside escape. It also offers a selection of dishes perfect for poolside dining, including sushi rolls, vibrant salads, and artisanal flatbreads. And for the ultimate luxury, there’s even a service to polish your sunglasses whilst you’re there. Our top tip? Opt for an afternoon slot (book well in advance as the demand is high) and savour a breathtaking sunset over the sizzling Dubai skyline.

Snow Cave, Saray Spa, Al Wathba Desert Resort

End your search for indoor activities at Al Wathba, a luxurious resort in Abu Dhabi's desert landscape (1hr 45 mins from Dubai). But natural beauty and tranquil surroundings aside, the real hotspot (or, we should say, coolspot) is the Saray Spa. Because as well as the usual saunas, jacuzzi, and steam rooms, it also has an ice-cold bucket room, plunge pools, and a salt room – but the pièce de resistance is its exclusive Snow Cave.

Building on the age-old healing practice of alternating between hot and cold, the Snow Cave is set to a brisk -2°C. So, once you’ve sweated out toxins in the sauna, step inside the chilly cave where you'll find seats and benches crafted out of ice and snow. Sit back and, quite literally, chill whilst the cold works its magic on your mind, body and – undoubtedly – mood.

Chillout Ice Lounge

When the summer heat really does become too unbearable, seek refuge at the Middle East’s first sub-zero lounge, which has been a glacial haven since 2007. You'll first enter a five-degree buffer zone to acclimatise before stepping into the lounge where the temperature is a frosty -6°C – and don’t worry if you don’t have the gear; upon arrival, you'll be kitted out with a thermal jacket, hat, gloves, and even footwear if needed.

It’s the kind of place you can indulge in a steaming mug of hot chocolate (yes, in summer) as you explore intricate ice sculptures, including seats and tables meticulously carved from ice, with the soft, icicle-style lighting creating a magical atmosphere reminiscent of the Northern Lights. For those feeling adventurous, opt for a full dining experience with a menu of hearty soups, sandwiches, BBQ skewers, and refreshing mocktails (note this is a dry venue).

Ski Dubai

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s unlikely you haven’t heard of Dubai’s indoor ski slope, Ski Dubai – which also happens to be the world’s largest indoor slope. Advanced skiers may find the moderate incline a bit of a bore, but the slope is perfect for beginners finding their feet or intermediate skiers keen to hone their skills. Whatever your skill level, pause halfway down at a cosy log cabin serving thick, gooey hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.

But it’s not just about carving up the slopes. You can also book a 40-minute penguin encounter. Yes, Ski Dubai is also home to a colony of charming Gentoo and king penguins. So, guided by one of the team’s animal care specialists, you could have a meet and greet with the snowy birds whilst you learn all about the centre’s thriving conservation programme.

Wim Hof Method (WHM)

Ice baths have become a staple for wellness aficionados in recent years, celebrated for their remarkable health benefits that optimise both body and mind. If you're looking to delve deeper into this trending phenomenon – or are simply seeking respite from Dubai’s sweltering heat with added health perks – look no further than Wim Hof, affectionately dubbed The Iceman. This Dutch sensation is globally renowned for his pioneering Wim Hof Method (WHM), a transformative practice blending cold exposure with controlled breathing techniques to enhance oxygen flow throughout the body, thereby boosting overall well-being.

In Dubai, WHM-certified instructors offer regular workshops catering to all levels – whether you’re an ice bath novice to ice baths, aiming to elevate physical your performance, or seeking relief from various ailments. And you might as well embrace this opportunity to learn a new skill while keeping your cool. Win, win.
