We've all marvelled at the splendour of St Paul's Cathedral but imagine doing so poolside from the rooftop of a 100-year-old building. Introducing The Ned: a hotel, private members' club and collection of restaurants opening in the City of London in early 2017.
With 17 members' clubs and 37 restaurants around the world, Soho House & Co is certainly no stranger to thinking big. However, when inspired to take over the City's Midland Bank Building (all 29,450 square meter of it) Founder Nick Jones decided to partner up with Sydell Group, a veteran developer with seven hotels across North America. Luckily, for London, they got on like a house on fire.
Originally designed in 1924 by Sir Edwin 'Ned' Landseer Lutyens, the Grade I-listed building looks set to become one of the capital's must-visit venues. Each of The Ned's 252 bedrooms will channel 1920s and 1930s design, with vintage pieces, brass and mahogany furniture and rainforest showers. Aside from comfort and style, an overnight stay affords access to Ned's Club which – split across two levels – features a panoramic rooftop with pool, Canopy Bar & Restaurant, Vault Room lounge bar (complete with 3,000 stainless steel safety deposit boxes from the bank's original vault) and a range of high-end gym and spa facilities.
Gourmands will not be left wanting at The Ned with eight public restaurants in the former Grand Banking Hall serving up cuisine from across the globe. The likes of Cecconi's City of London will be the destination for handmade pasta, pizza and seafood, while Café Sou London will offer a traditional Parisian café experience.
