Road Tripping Through The Beautiful American South & Midwest

Words by Keven Amfo

Explore the American southwest traditionally - by road. Punctuate the scenic drive with stays at these four beautiful properties.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, Santa Fe, New Mexico

The smallest of the Four Seasons properties in the US, this boutique-style resort is set amongst 57 acres in the New Mexico foothills, allowing for awe-inspiring views from most areas in the resort. Decorated in traditional Southwestern style, the rooms are housed in regional adobe-style buildings and feature fireplaces should you choose to visit during colder months. The central pool feels like a desert oasis - enjoy a Prickly Pear Margarita poolside as you unwind.

Zapata Ranch, Mosca, Colorado

An authentic working cattle and bison ranch, Zapata Ranch is spread over 100,000 acres and borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park - one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes in the US, with desert grasslands, alpine forests, wetlands, dunes, and lush meadows. Less of a luxury experience and more of a hands-on adventure, Zapata is an excellent stay for anyone who wants to experience ranching or improve their riding skills. Meals are served family-style in the central lodge and are personally tailored to guests’ preference. After a long day of livestock, early retiring to the minimalist log-cabin-style guest rooms is a necessity.

Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa, Moab, Utah

Located on the banks of the Colorado River, this property offers stunning views. Each of the Western-kitsch decorated rooms has a porch or a deck, perfect for enjoying sunset drinks. The activity-filled property (tennis courts, swimming pool, spa, petting zoo) beckons you to stay on-site, but be sure also to take advantage of the spectacular surroundings. Explore the neighbouring Arches and Canyonlands national parks, or have the staff arrange a river rafting trip or canyoneering adventure on your behalf.

Sundance Mountain Resort, Sundance, Utah

Just outside of Park City, you’ll find this storied property. Both the rooms and cabins feature rustic chic decor, with cosy fireplaces and usually a deck or patio. The resort’s location at the base of Mountain Timpanogos is perfect for engaging in outdoor activities - enjoy snow sports in the winter, and hiking or mountain biking during summertime. Alternatively, stay on the property and take advantage of their many crafting classes, from jewellery making to pottery. Live music at the bar during the evening creates a festive communal vibe.
