Hong Kong’s restaurant scene is one of the world’s most dynamic, with food trends that ebb and flow with the tides. The latest wave comes courtesy of the French, which is no surprise given that they make up one of the city’s largest expat communities. From lively see-and-be-seen bistros to Art Deco-inspired brasseries to one of Hong Kong’s best alfresco restaurants, we’ve rounded up our pick of fabulous French restaurants – just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Chouchou

Best for: date night.

Opened: January 2026.

The traditional tourte française is the star of the show at this smart brasserie. It’s wrapped in shiny golden pastry and filled with layers of Comté cheese, Parisian ham, and potatoes – and tastes even better than it looks. It’s a dish meant for two but there’s plenty more on offer, from creamy steak tartare to toasted brioche topped with fois gras to choux au chocolate. For an extra layer of romance book a table on the terrace, where you can watch Hong Kong’s famous trams tootle past.

The Menu Dégustation at Gaddi’s

Best for: a special proposal.

Opened: January 2026.

While The Peninsula’s flagship French restaurant isn’t new (it’s been staging marriage proposals since 1953) a new chef’s table makes it a worthy addition to this list. This new experience takes guests from the opulent dining room – all white table cloths, silver candelabras, and live music – on an exclusive tour of the restaurant’s fabled kitchens. After a welcome drink and photo with the chef, diners indulge in a four- or six-course degustation menu featuring dishes such as king crab with daikon and chervil bavaroise and baby lamb trilogy with black truffle.

Salon Des Refusés

Best for: coastal flavours.

Opened: July 2025.

Chef Luca Marinelli takes diners on a journey along France’s Mediterranean coast with a light and sunny menu that focusses on zingy fresh seafood. You can watch the chefs preparing dishes such as cod tarama with radish and toasted croutons or red tilefish bouillabaisse with saffron potatoes at the six-seater bar counter. Or cosy up around candlelit dining tables for a tête-à-tête over a bottle of rich and fruity rosé grenache.

La Terrace by Louise

Best for: alfresco fare.

Opened: June 2025.

With its winning location, chic interiors by André Fu, and a Michelin star, this dazzling French fine dining restaurant commands a loyal following of well-heeled customers. Now, they’ve transformed the downstairs lounge and outdoor gardens into a more casual bistro, with an all-day menu and a soul music soundtrack. The three-course set lunch is a steal given the quality of the food but there are a few à la carte dishes you shouldn’t miss, including the hamachi with yuzu and the potato and caviar millefeuille.

Jean-Pierre

Best for: wooing clients.

Opened: April 2025.

The latest venture from the lauded Black Sheep restaurant group, this flamboyant French restaurant has a buzzy location on Bridges Street. The dining room takes inspiration from fin de siècle Paris with lashings of red velvet, burgundy marbles, and brass fixtures. The atmosphere is exuberant – particularly on a Friday night – with a suitably decadent menu of perfectly executed French favourites to match. Don’t miss the juicy steak tartare, vampire-repelling escargot, and the homely boeuf bourguignon. Arrive early to enjoy a cornichon martini or two on the terrace.

Lala

Best for: a place to see and be seen.

Opened: February 2025.

Lala has quickly established itself as one of Hong Kong’s buzziest dining rooms. Whether you’re visiting for lunch, dinner, or coffee and cake on the petite patio, expect to find a full house of chatty diners tucking into plates inspired by the French Riviera. Applying a lighter touch than most, chef Franckelie Laloum’s classic dishes are low of butter and cream but pack just as much flavour. Order the langoustines and avocado swimming in pink cocktail sauce, sweetbread and blue lobster in flaky vol-au-vent cases, and charcoal grilled Black Angus beef with Béarnaise sauce.

Babette

Best for: a cool but casual vibe.

Opened: January 2025.

If you’re looking for a convivial neighbourhood bistro serving the kind of dishes you’ll want to keep going back for, look no further than Babette. Fauve artworks decorate the walls and ruby red banquettes overlook a gantry filled with an eclectic wine collection. Chef Cédric Tsai, formerly of two-Michelin-star Amber at the Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, is behind the comforting menu. Highlights include the silky oeuf parfait (organic egg, foie gras, mushrooms, gingerbread croutons), yellow chicken served with buttery greens and Koshihikari rice, and the light rice pudding with salty caramel and cinnamon.
