Maui’s hidden treasures

Explore some of Hawaii's second-largest island's undercover gems.

Words by Keven Amfo

The second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Maui is defined by scenic beaches and towering volcanoes. Incredibly beautiful, the popular tourist destination feels authentic and true to the Spirit of Aloha. Whilst the sought-after sights are absolutely worth visiting, we’ve uncovered some lesser-known marvels that must be experienced as well. We have a feeling you won’t want to leave.

Waimoku Waterfalls

Waimoku Waterfalls

Seeing this breathtaking 400-foot waterfall requires a four-mile (roundtrip) hike, up 650 feet in elevation. We promise, though—it is worth it. En route, you’ll see several beautiful pools and Banyan trees, and pass through a bamboo forest. Wake early, and spend a morning trekking to this incredible natural wonder.

Gus Hawaiian Shave Ice

Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice

A signature Hawaiian treat, shave ice is fluffy snow-like ice that is covered in different flavours of syrup. Gus’ is family-run and served out of a vintage Volkswagen bus—and the syrups are made from 100% sugar cane. Follow their social media to find out where the van will be for the day.

Maui Upcountry Farmers Market

Maui Upcountry Farmers Market

This 40-year-old Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning in Pukalani. Visiting really gives a taste for the myriad fruit, produce and coffee the island has to offer. Prepared foods and handmade jewellery are also available, and often the experience is accompanied by live traditional Hawaiian music.

Venus Pool

Waioka Pond

This surreal pool is separated from the ocean by a series of majestic black rocks, but it comes with a caveat—the path to reach it is a bit treacherous, and it is prone to flash flooding. We suggest hiring a local guide who can help you find it and ensure you arrive safely. The experience is incredibly rewarding; jumping off rocks into a calm pool with the ocean as a backdrop is pretty special.

South Maui Fish Co

South Maui Fish Company

Poke is a Hawaiian staple dish, and whilst it is served all over Maui, South Maui Fish Company executes it perfectly. The menu changes daily, but the poke is always made with sustainably caught, sashimi-grade tuna. The accompanying pineapple coconut milk coleslaw is delicious as well...

Kaihalulu Beach

Kaihalulu Beach

One of few red sand beaches in the world, this off the beaten path crescent-shaped cove is strikingly beautiful. The terracotta sand contrasts the vibrant turquoise water, which is calm compared to the ocean beyond. Again, accessible only by a path, it may be worth visiting with a guide. Either way—do not miss this one-in-a-million beach.

Coconut Glens Ice Cream4

Coconut Glen’s Ice Cream

Maybe not-so-secret, but worth a reminder—Coconut Glen’s is a must-eat when in Maui. All of the ice creams are coconut-based and vegan, but you’d never know. The texture is reminiscent of dairy ice cream, and the taste of coconut does not compromise the flavours. Served in a half coconut shell, we highly recommend trying several.

After experiencing a bit of Maui, you’ll probably want to stay forever. If you decide to take the plunge and make it permanent, Quintessentially Estates can help you acquire a property on the island.
