Why one-to-one tuition is the secret to scholarly success

Working with a tutor can reduce stress and increase exam performance – here’s how.

Even if your school days are long gone, there’s still a discernible nervousness in the air during the Easter holidays. Exam season is coming – meaning those all-important GCSEs, A-Levels, IBs, and university tests will soon be entering the arena.

However, one way to soothe frazzled nerves and help students reach their full academic potential is one-to-one private tuition – which we’ve got decades of experience in arranging and, according to the Sutton Trust, has increased in popularity by 27% since the pandemic. The reason is simple: when correctly applied, it works.

So, as our team is busy handling tutoring enquiries, Education Manager Amelia Buckworth shares four reasons why private tuition is worth it – and how it can help students to succeed.

1. Areas of weakness can be identified and tackled.

Tutors help students identify and target areas they particularly struggle with, which is often impossible in a classroom setting with larger pupil-to-teacher ratios. Students can then tackle the material they struggle with in their own time and at their own pace. Win-win.

2. Personalised lessons inspire greater creative thinking.

Gone are the days when students reluctantly work through activities in a textbook. Instead, private tutors plan and provide lessons that are personalised to the student’s preferred learning style and individual interests – often resulting in increased creativity and retention.

3. Lessons suit your schedule, not the other way around.

Tutors tailor their lessons to each student’s needs and can deliver them in different formats. For example, in-person tuition is available to our London-based students, online learning is for anyone anywhere in the world, and residential schooling is for those who need intensive assistance.

4. The results speak for themselves.

Tutors can help students develop revision techniques, confidence, time management, and independent study skills – which are difficult for teachers to teach in school due to their personalised nature. This can result in higher attainment; last summer, 96% of our GCSE and A-Level tutored students met or exceeded their predicted grades.
