With over 1,000 islands in the Maldives and 200 of those dotted with stunning hotel resorts, each one more amazing than the next, it can be quite a feat to pick out the perfect one for you. That's why we have curated a Quintessentially guide to the finest Maldivian resorts, based on each resort's unique speciality.

Most Romantic - Hurawalhi

Having already played host to ten marriage proposals in the underwater restaurant alone, since opening exactly one year ago, Hurawalhi is certainly top of the list when it comes to being the most romantic resort in the Maldives. With an incredible sandbank, aptly named 'Dream Island', just a five-minute boat ride from the resort, as well as an overwater swing that strategically allows for full-on views of unforgettable sunsets, there are so many breathtaking, hidden spots around Hurawalhi to keep the romantic surprises coming. Wind your clock back an hour because Hurawalhi's self-imposed daylight-saving time allows guests an extra 60 minutes of sun.

The resort is located on a lagoon brimming with marine life; ideal for sightings of reef sharks, stingrays, manta rays and schools of fish. To make this a truly immersive experience, Hurawalhi has taken it one step further with the underwater restaurant - 5.8 Undersea Restaurant - where the spectacle starts, as day turns to night and the whole spectrum of rainbow coloured reef life goes about its feeding activity.

If you are planning to pop the question, the resort team can arrange two scuba divers to hold a "Will you marry me?" sign to add sparkle to your proposal. Hurawalhi will leave you with lifelong memories.

Most Luxurious - Cheval Blanc Randheli by LVMH Hotel Management

If supreme luxury is your thing, we've got just the place for you. With one of the most expensive presidential suites in the world located on its very own private island, it's no wonder Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives is the most prestigious. Your experience starts in the sky as the seaplane takes you on the scenic 40-minute flight to the northern atoll location.

There are only 46 villas at the main resort and they are well spread out, so you can relax in the knowledge that you won't be disturbed at all during your stay. Each villa has its own spacious living room, bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and a very generous semi outdoor bathroom. The design replicates the look and feel of a deluxe residential experience.

The butler or 'Majordome' caters to your every need, while the 'Alchemist' helps you to create an utterly bespoke island itinerary for you to make the most of your stay.

Best for Families - One & Only Reethi Rah

It would be easy to assume that the Maldives are largely exclusive to couples, but the islands are becoming increasingly family-friendly. The One & Only Reethi Rah describes itself as a 'vibrant island playground' and you can see why. There's so much to do, we don't even know where to begin!

Younger activities are divided into three age groups: Kids Only (aged 4 - 9), One Tribe (aged 9 - 11) and Teens (aged 12 and upwards). From swimming and snorkelling, to diving, rock climbing, tennis, art and cooking classes, this resort has something for every age group. The inclusive spirit extends to the the resorts spa, which also specialises in family packages to be enjoyed together.

With experienced counsellors available to keep an eye on younger family members , you know they are in good hands, which leaves you time to embark on your own journey of recuperation. For adventurers and thrill seekers, the resort provides a range of power sports, such as speed boat hire, water skiing, wakeboarding and parasailing, among others.

Best House Reef - W Maldives

Ever dreamt of having the most unspoiled marine life right there, on your doorstep to marvel at? Well our travel experts say that W Hotel's house reef is among the best for just this. Most resorts will take you on a 30-minute minute boat ride to visit the outer areas of the reef but at W Hotel Maldives, you can jump into your snorkeling gear whenever and wherever you wish. Its oval-shaped reef means that you can dive right into the ocean anywhere at the resort and explore the fantastically diverse sea life brimming with schools of colourful fish, as well as species of rays, sea turtles, reef sharks and tuna - perfect for those stunning underwater shots but remember to respect the marine life and keep your distance at all times.

This five-star retreat has 77 luxurious private villas, each equipped with its own infinity plunge pool and a sunbathing deck. The contemporary, hip design incorporates elements of Maldivian island life with its natural colour schemes, making it one of the coolest hotels in the whole of the Maldives.

Best for Nature - Coco Bodu Hithi

If you've headed to the Maldives for the marine life, Coco Bodu Hithi is "the" place to be. With Turtle Point and Shark Point only a five- to ten- minute boat ride away, the resort is home to an impressive array of marine species. Snorkel or scuba dive along the ocean current at Turtle Point with the resort's marine biologist, or head to Shark Point to catch sight of some reef and nurse sharks. A little further away is Manta Point, about ten to 15 minutes away from Coco Bodu's main island. The best time to see the magnificent Manta rays is between December and April, when the sea currents shift a south-easterly direction, bringing with them great sources of food, namely plankton, closer to the shores.

There's also Coco Collection's premium property, Coco Prive, nearby; a cosy, luxurious retreat that is extra private and extra special. To stay there, you'll need to book out the entire island. It's that private! Prices start at HKD $170,000 a night, this Maldivian paradise accommodates up to 12 people maximum and has four individual villas, and an extension from the island 'mansion' or main house area. Booking a night at Coco Prive means that you also get access to a private spa, gym, personal library, diving instructor, as well as four separate swimming pools. Not bad...!
