Thailand’s new hotels

With travel having reopened to one of our favourite destinations in Asia, Thailand, we’re anxious to head east and explore some of the new hotels which have recently opened. Unique for offering both tropical beaches and bustling cities – plus everything in between – now is the perfect opportunity to make the most of this magical destination.

The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon

Part of The Standard’s swift global expansion, this Bangkok property – coming in May – is located in the city’s famous Mahanakhon building. The airy rooms maximise their position in the skyscraper with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer incredible views from the (comfy) bed; choose a suite with a balcony for the optimal vantage point. Several dining options offer a variety of cuisines. We love the pop graphic look that cocktail bar Tease will bring, the chic feel of Mexican-inspired Ojo Bangkok, the American classics of The Standard Grill, and the fruity drinks at rooftop Sky Beach. Nodding to favourites from other Standard properties, they’ve nailed the vibe here – it manages to be both comfortable and new, with an incredible setting as a backdrop.

Explorar Pawapi Koh Mook

This breathtaking resort is located on a pristine island surrounded by picturesque beaches and sparkling turquoise water. The accommodations are sparse, but that’s fine – you won’t want to be in your room anyway. A focus on experiences encourages exploration of the area, and staff are local and genuinely knowledgeable. For a magically romantic escape, don’t miss Emerald Cave, accessible only by a swim; stay at the resort and enjoy beachside spa treatments or bespoke cooking classes. The culinary programme spotlights local cuisine, introducing new dishes and flavours alongside more familiar ones, all incorporating freshly caught fish and locally grown fruit and veg.

Meliá Chiang Mai

A new high rise in the heart of the city, this hotel pairs modern accommodations with panoramic views and convenient access to local tourist attractions. Comfortable and minimalist, the rooms offer everything necessary for an effortless stay. A social destination as well, the 22nd-floor rooftop bar offers incredible views over the city and River Ping and serves Spanish food – should you prefer Thai, venture down a flight to the 21st floor and enjoy a contemporary Northern Thai menu. The onsite spa pairs ancient Asian therapies with modern innovations for a unique range of treatments; the traditional Thai sauna incites detox with a special herbal blend.

InterContinental Khao Yai National Park

Located three hours outside of Bangkok, this stunning new hotel’s pièce de résistance are the luxury suites located in repurposed heritage train cars. Featuring views over seven lakes and a location nestled amongst the trees, the property pays homage to the forgone days of glamorous train travel, as designed by renowned architect Bill Bensley. There is a lakeside pool and Thai restaurant onsite – order room service if you can’t bear to leave your stylish train suite – while the Caboose Bar serves expertly crafted cocktails. A soon-to-come spa is housed in an upcycled train car, as well.

Meliá Phuket Mai Khao

Located on the longest beach in north Phuket, this wellness resort has a serene sensibility. Many of the suites and rooms feature plunge pools and outdoor bathtubs, and natural décor enhances the pervasive sense of relaxation felt throughout the property. Further that feeling by taking a yoga class on the beach or going for a sunset horseback ride – time spent here is best for chilling and enjoyment. Three dining destinations service guests from morning till night; fish is exceptionally fresh, and the excellent cocktails at the swim-up bar utilise fresh juice made from local fruits.
