Whether current guidelines permit indoor dining, outdoor dining, or only takeaway, it’s exciting nonetheless to add a new restaurant to the roster. Some of our favourite restaurants have opened new locations in other cities, and some of our favourite cities have welcomed new additions. Either way, enjoy these delicious newcomers.
Gigi’s, LA
We had long been waiting for Gigi’s, which encountered a few delays before finally opening its doors – currently for takeout only until pandemic restrictions ease. French with a bit of edge, the food is well-executed and appealing. The raw bar, in particular, features expected items alongside those with a bit of a twist, be it in a sauce or presentation. The cheeseburger is everything we wanted it to be, and the Parisian Gnocchi, above, is unexpectedly rich with flavour. When indoor dining reopens, post up at the beautiful bar – the decor (pictured at top) was inspired by Bemelman’s and beckons a linger with a martini in hand.
Carbone, Miami
Still one of the most coveted reservations in NYC, Michelin-starred Carbone adds a Miami location to its roster. Featuring the popular items from its original menu, including Spicy Rigatoni Vodka and Caesar alla ZZ – theatrically prepared tableside by the tuxedo-clad servers – dinner here is indulgent, and an event. The setting is opulent and deserving, taking cues from their other locations and adding a bit more pizzazz, with a strong art presence. Most dishes are served sharing-style; start with cocktails and a seafood platter, linger over appetizers, try several of the mains, have a couple bottles of wine, and don’t forget dessert.
Californios, San Francisco
Californios moved into a larger space in SoMa in the former Bar Agricole space, having already established itself as the go-to destination for Mexican fine-dining in San Francisco. Featuring a large patio, this new location will accommodate more diners, allowing more people to experience the brilliant tasting menus. A meal here is not a casual in-and-out experience; expect a lengthy dinner filled with delicious surprises and accompanied by excellent wines. It will not disappoint.
Penny Bridge, NYC
Chef Dan Kluger brings his seasonal cuisine to Long Island City. The menu features classic American comfort or diner-style food but expectedly elevated. Some of the menu items have been borrowed from Kluger’s Loring Place, such as square pizzas and a truly fabulous cheeseburger. The mozzarella sticks are made with fontina, and in lieu of onion rings, he serves delicata squash rings in a weightless panko batter. A bit healthier, but not annoyingly so, and no less delicious – the wings are as good as the chopped salad and vice versa – and don’t miss the cookies or sundae for dessert.
Bludorn Restaurant, Houston
Star of Netflix’s The Final Table, Aaron Bludorn, has opened his namesake restaurant at 807 Taft Street. Highly anticipated, the restaurant opened to much fanfare – and the menu does not disappoint. Equal parts French and American, it includes a delicious raw bar, fresh seasonal produce, perfectly executed meats and a few kinds of pasta, including our favourite, Spaghetti with Sea Urchin and Blue Crab. The lengthy wine list spotlights both old and new world; the outdoor patio is perfect for a lengthy dinner with drinks.
